What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy involves a series of movements designed to correct disturbances in muscles, ligaments and joints. It is also so much more than correcting musculoskeletal disturbances. Often the blood and nerve supply to the various tissues and organs of the body are obstructed. By specific movements in and around these tissues, and distant to the site of pain, osteopaths are able to release these obstructions.

As alluded to above, Osteopathy can address many different conditions as well as painful backs, shoulders and knees; for example, recurrent headaches, may be relieved over a period of time. Painful joints and muscles may arise through: specific injuries, accidents, sprains and falls; or problems with posture, occupation, habits and heredity; or compensatory problems arising from elsewhere in the body; or reflex problems caused by a diseased organ of the body.

What does treatment with an Osteopath involve?

After a full medical case history is taken, a clinical examination and then treatment is given, if appropriate. This involves a standing examination, then examination of the spine and limbs in different positions on the treatment bench. The treatment involves gentle movement of the arms or legs with one hand, whilst a fulcrum hand is used, for example, in the low back at the spine.

Does osteopathy hurt?

No, not usually. Most patients say the treatment is very gentle and very effective. Some patients arrive for treatment in a lot of pain-this may cause some discomfort to alleviate their pain.

I’ve heard that there is a crack or click in treatment. Is that when it’s sore?

No.There may be a sound like a crack, when we make an adjustment in a joint.Whilst we are not trying to elicit a crack, you will usually feel much better after the adjustment.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No. Many patients come directly to the osteopath. With some medical conditions it is wise to have your General Practitioner examine you, and when your osteopath takes your case history he will advise you on whether this is the case.

Will my private health plan cover me for Osteopathic Fees?

Yes, in all likelihood it will. This practice is covered by most private health plans.

How many times will I have to visit the osteopath?

As a rule of thumb, it depends on how long the condition has been evident. Usually, osteopathic treatment involves 4-6 treatment sessions. It can be less and equally it can be more.

What should I wear?

Because your spine will need to be examined and treated, it is best to wear clothing that does not cover too much of the spine. That is, normal underwear is quite sufficient for the purposes of treatment.
